Sully was mad at himself. Casey was mad at him. He made her mad. Casey might of been short tempered but her temper was also short lived. Sure, Sully was used to that but Casey had barely looked at him since they went to Micky-dee's together weeks ago. He was mad at himself for making Casey mad, he was mad at himself for being an idiot and thinking he was actually on a Date with Case, but mostly he was mad at himself for falling in love with her.
Sully had been a goner in that respect since they hit puberty. They had been friends ever since the first day of Kindergarten when some of the big bad older boys picked on Casey for wearing pants instead of dresses and for her short hair. Sully, who was obsessed with superheros at the time, tried to save the day but Casey would have none of that nonsense. After she eye-poked, foot-stomped and ear-pulled the wanna-be bullies, Casey bonked Sully on the head for trying to help her out. When he told her he was just trying to be like the superheros in his comic books, she told him that she could kick superhero-butt too and he agreed. They had been inseparable ever since, but when we were in the seventh grade something funny started happening. Sully started to see things about Casey that has escaped his noticed before, like how soft her was and how it was the color of chocolate (Sully's favorite flavor of milkshake/ice cream), or how her skin was so naturally tanned that it seemed to glow, or how she looked in a swimming suit, or how her lips looked so...well....kissable.
"Ugh," Sully sighed at the ceiling of their old tree-fort. He had been sulking in here for a while, long enough to re-read all of their homemade comics. What was the time? Sully never wore a watch mainly because Casey always wore her father's old watch so there was no need. Then Sully heard something strange, the sound of someone else coming up the latter.
Casey couldn't stop thinking about Sully which wasn't all that out of the ordinary. Ever since kindergarten, anything that Casey thought was cool would make her think of him because she wanted to show him everything she thought was cool. Besides food (mainly french fried), Casey wanted to share everything with Sully. But this time was different, she wasn't thinking about stuff to share with him or about what he'd think in her predicament. She was thinking about how he felt about her, and even scarier how she felt about how he felt about her.
She had gone over the evidence in her head and one thing was clear: Sully had lovey-dovey feelings for her to some extent. For weeks this had made her furious but now that she was walking to the tree-house with bag of grub, she asked herself why it made her so mad. Because it didn't make any sense as to why he liked her, she thought. Casey knew she wasn't pretty. She never acted like a girl around him, or anyone really. Casey had inherited her mother's bust or lack of bust. Her hair was the color of scat. So why would Sully ever be interested in her in that way? It was pointless to be upset, anyhoo. She didn't even know for sure that he liked her. The only true way for her to know is to ask him. She reached the tree house and started to climb the latter. Only to be met by a surprise.
"SULLY!" Casey practically screamed in his face.
"Oh, um... hey, Case," Sully weakly waved at her with a slightly guilty grin. His normal pale pinkish complexion burned all most as red as Casey's shirt. 'I thought I was the only one to come here anymore,' they both thought at the same time. Casey decided without really thinking that it was now or never to know the truth.
"DoYouLoveMe?" Casey blurted out. Sully could feel his stomach drop.
"Pfft!" Sully dismissed nervously, "Of course I don't love you, woman!" Casey made a barely audible 'oh' sound. Something flashed in those beautiful eyes of her's. Sully sat nervously on his feet his hand twisted in his lap. He had a sudden urge to kiss her.
So he did. Sully leaned down to Casey quickly and put her face in his hands and kissed his best friend firmly on the lips. It happened so fast that Casey found herself in shock for the second time in two minutes. One moment ago he told her that he didn't love her and in that moment Casey had felt even more upset than she had been for some unidentifiable reason. And then he kissed her! The shock kept her eyes wide open but the world became discolored and pink. It'd have been cliche to say there was mental fireworks but there was definitely something. There was years of hidden affection and ignored passion behind that kiss.
Sully leaned back up with his hand still cupping Casey's cheek. Casey and Sully just stared at each other for long time. It was probably just a few seconds but it felt like days. Casey kept peering into his eyes, swimming pool blue, trying and failing to form an understandable thought. Sully could hear his heart pounding in his ears.
Finally, Casey realized that she had had a bag of food in her hand and now she did not. "....I, uh, food, fell...I.. I, uh, get food...yeah," she stumbled the words from her mouth. Blushing up a storm, she ducked down the latter. Her mouth was still open in the shock of it all. He kissed her but it wasn't all that bad. It didn't feel like she had been kissed by a brother or a cousin like she might of thought it be like. It was nice, if the whole 'what the butt is happening' feeling had not been there that is. Sully kissed her and she didn't know what to think about anything anymore.
Casey was practically running way from him. Sully squished his palms to very warm, very red face. He kissed her and it was obvious that she was going to hate him forever now. How could he be so impulsive and stupid and horny!? Sully wanted nothing more than to fall out of the tree house and break his neck. But dying wasn't going to make Casey any happier or more in-love with him.
